In my article on AMS purge waste I ran the numbers: an average multicolor print throws away roughly €2.50 in purged filament and machine time. Which begs the obvious follow-up: should you switch architectures? Because for multicolor printing, 2026 is the turning point — toolchangers, printers with one dedicated toolhead per color, are dropping from industrial territory into the consumer bracket, at prices that would have sounded absurd two years ago.

In this article I compare the two architectures using numbers the community has actually measured, list the machines that shipped (or are shipping) in 2026, and — the part most reviews skip — calculate the break-even in money: how many multicolor prints per month it takes for a toolchanger to pay for itself versus sticking with your AMS.

Two philosophies: one nozzle for everything, or one nozzle per color

Systems like the AMS (Bambu Lab), MMU3 (Prusa), CFS (Creality) and ACE (Anycubic) are filament changers: one extruder, one nozzle, and on every color change the machine unloads the old filament, loads the new one and purges until the color runs clean. It's the architecture that made multicolor affordable for everyone — but purging is a structural cost. The transition material ends up in the tower or the "poop" pile, and the unload-load-purge cycle adds up on every single swap.

A toolchanger flips the problem: each color gets its own toolhead with its own nozzle, and the machine swaps the entire head. Nothing to purge, because every nozzle stays "dirty" with its own color. All that remains is a small priming tower to re-pressurize the nozzle after sitting idle — grams, not tens of grams.

The community's measurements show how wide the gap is. In CNC Kitchen's benchmark (Bambu X1C + AMS against the toolchanging Prusa XL, same exact model), the toolchanger saved 26.5 g of filament and 50 minutes on a 9-hour print. In the Snapmaker U1 tests by stlDenise3D and Tom's Hardware, a plate with 90 color swaps produced 4.4 g of tower in total — the same plate on an AMS with default flushing values throws away more than 85 g. Time tells the same story: a 3-color print gets 24 minutes longer on the U1 and 2.5 hours longer on a P1P with AMS, because a toolhead swap takes 10-15 seconds while a filament change takes 1-3 minutes.

The machines of 2026

As of July 2026, the consumer/prosumer toolchanger lineup looks like this:

  • Bondtech INDX — the most elegant approach: an induction-powered Smart Head that docks with up to 8 passive tools (no motors or electronics on board, which keeps them cheap), swapping in 12-16 seconds. €499 for the 4-tool kit, €699 for 8. Currently a Prusa CORE One exclusive, retail from Q2 2026.
  • Snapmaker U1 — 4 toolheads, CoreXY, 270 mm cube. Its $20.6M Kickstarter is the most-funded 3D printer campaign ever. $999 MSRP, $849 at launch.
  • Sovol M1D — a curious hybrid: IDEX (two independent carriages) plus 6 swappable toolheads, for 7 materials total. 300×300×350 build volume. From $1,499 on Kickstarter.
  • Bambu H2C — Bambu's answer: the Vortek system physically swaps 8 hotends on a single head. The telling number is the official claim: −58% purge versus the AMS. Not −100% — an open admission that a single-extruder path still purges, even with hotend swapping. $2,399 for the combo.
  • Flashforge Creator 5 / 5 Pro — 4 toolheads with a ~7-second FlashSwap docking system, at $649/$799: the cheapest ticket into the category.
  • Prusa XL — the veteran, up to 5 toolheads, with a price cut of roughly $200 in 2026.
  • Creality has teased a system called "KliTek": coming soon.

The break-even math

Here's the part no review does for you: when is switching actually worth it? The math is simple, and you can redo it with your own numbers.

From my previous article's estimate, an average multicolor print on an AMS wastes about 50 g of purge (€1.25 at €25/kg) plus 2 hours of machine time in filament changes (€1.20 in depreciation and electricity): ~€2.50 per print. A toolchanger eliminates almost all of it — a few grams of priming tower and a few minutes of swaps remain — so for simplicity let's take €2.50 as the gross saving per print. That's the optimistic ceiling, but the order of magnitude holds.

The reading is blunt: under 10 multicolor prints a month, a toolchanger doesn't pay for itself in any reasonable timeframe — a well-calibrated AMS remains the rational choice. Above 20, the math starts working, and there's a second effect the table doesn't capture: the 2.5 hours saved per print are production capacity. If your printer is the bottleneck and you're turning down orders because it's always busy, a toolchanger doesn't just save you money — it lets you take more work.

The honest trade-offs (that no Kickstarter page mentions)

A toolchanger isn't free, and I don't just mean the price tag:

  1. Higher upfront cost for the same build volume — and every extra toolhead costs money.
  2. XY offset calibration between tools: if the heads aren't aligned to a hundredth of a millimeter, colors won't line up. The 2026 machines automate it, but it's one more thing that can drift.
  3. Maintenance multiplied: N toolheads means N nozzles, N fans, N hotends to clean and eventually replace.
  4. A hard color limit: 4-8 tools, full stop. AMS units stack — four of them get you to 16+ colors, which no consumer toolchanger can match.

The community consensus after a year of testing is sensible: AMS for occasional multicolor, toolheads for people who do it often or for a living. Which is exactly what the break-even table says.
